Shopping in Lille

The best shopping in Lille is all within a clearly defined walkable area from the Grand Place. With so much to choose from the question remains: Is Lille the ultimate in retail therapy?

Commercial acumen is rife in Lille. From the humble honey roasted peanut vendor who appears at sunset to imbue the evening air with sweet aromas to the classy high fashions shops with fabulously decorated windows.

Everywhere you look there is somewhere enticing to go shopping. Famous designers have an outlet in the heart of Lille. Major names such as Auchan and La Redout have their origins here. Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Yves St Laurent, amongst others, grace the roads with their stylish presence especially in Rue Esquermoise.

Throughout the city there are specialist shops selling art, interior decorative ornaments, ethnic memorabilia, pens, jewellry, fragrant soaps and anything else you care to think of. You’ll be hard pushed to know where to flash your credit card first.

The Grand Place is a good place to start then turning into rue Grand Chaussee leading off from the square where stylish shops are prolific.

Lille has a very good selection of general and antique markets and they are the best places to buy the freshest local produce including vegetables, cheese direct from the dairy, andouillettes (sausages), chicory and endives.

There’s also a flea market which takes places three times a week and other markets dotted around Lille include a twice-monthly Saturday morning art market.

But no shopping experience can offer the excitement and fun of the annually held braderies.
